Christmas Destinations in Germany

Germany is diverse country with varied landscapes, nature and culture. Germany offers visitors a mosaic of experiences. Historic villages and cities from old churches to town halls, and opera houses offer a wealth of architectural delights. The traditional market stalls and beautiful cobbled streets of many towns or the castles are traditional sights to savor. During Christmas enjoy some of the stunning Christmas markets in Germany. Bavaria is a region typically famous for the annual Octoberfest and very fine beer. The Bavarian Alps with pristine lakes and soaring mountains, offer a natural border and setting for the region makes it a popular outdoor recreation area for locals and visitors during Christmas.

Frankfurt situated on the River Main is a home to an array of festivals, fairs, and carnivals each year especially during the Christmas such as the Festival of Lights. People gather during Christmas to see the beautiful skyline of Frankfurt displayed with fireworks. During this time hundreds of photographers from worldwide throng the city to capture the display of fireworks over River Maine.

Berlin the capital city of Germany is a popular Christmas destination in Germany and is the home of world class universities, top sporting events, and arts academies such as for music and dance. During Christmas Berlin hosts several Christmas markets which are as old as 150 years. The Stiezelmarkt Market in Dresden displays German fairy tales. The ice skating rink is filled with rides and games which transform the atmosphere with fun and frolic.

Further to the north the sandy beaches bordering the North Sea and Germany's largest island, the Ruegen Island situated off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are popular Christmas destinations in Germany.

Germany's oldest Christmas market is in the Bavarian toy-manufacturing town of Nuremberg. The Christkindlesmarkt, or Christ Child's Market which dates back hundreds of years, opens on the last Friday of November and runs through Christmas Eve. Each year, nearly 2 million people from around the world visit the market. In the weekends there are entertainments, choirs and concerts. On second Thursday of December thousands of schoolchildren parade through the streets of the town near the market holding candle-lit lanterns to the city’s medieval castle singing songs. It is perhaps the most memorable sights of Europe.

Cologne built along the Rhein River, is a magnificent city of culture, nightlife, and recreation. Cologne hosts several annual festivals, like the Winter Carnival, and is home to a variety of dance clubs and bars. It has dozens of art and history museums. Tourists visiting Cologne during Christmas won’t be disappointed.

Rothenburg is the most visited Christmas Destination in Germany which during this time is transformed into a winter wonderland. The city invites its visitors to the most enchanting atmosphere at the oldest Christmas Market of Germany called the "Reiterlesmarkt" which dates back to the 15th century. Rothenburg is one of Germany’s most-visited towns, and is always crowded. The crowds gather during the annual celebration leading up to Christmas. As part of the celebration, visitors visit the Christmas Village, built inside of two homes in the middle of the old town. As you enter, an animated display of toy animals greets you. The slowly rotating 20-foot high white Christmas tree is decorated with hundreds of ornaments in red and blue leaving you stunned.
